Protecting Your Personal Files on Dropbox from OpenAI

If you’ve ever used any of Dropbox’s artificial intelligence tools, it may have resulted in some of your documents and files being shared with OpenAI.

One of these AI tools is Dropbox’s chatbot, which collaborated with OpeenAI to provide chatbot services like summarizing or answering queries about your files. However, this arrangement has raised some concerns for customers.

Any customers that have used the AI tools initiate their documents to pass through and be stored on OpenAi’s servers for up to 30 days. By default, the “third-party AI” toggle is enabled in account settings, meaning users must disable this toggle to prevent their files from being sent to OpenAI when using any of these related features.

How to Disable OpenAI Sharing in Dropbox

To disable the use of third-party AI in Dropbox settings and prevent your data from being sent outside the platform, follow these steps:

  1. Log into Dropbox
  2. Click your account icon in the upper right corner
  3. Click “Settings”
  4. Choose the “Third-Party AI” tab
  5. Toggle the switch to “off”

Protect Your Content and Data with Aspera

Dropbox’s third-party AI data sharing applies only to users who opt for Dropbox’s AI features, available through different paid plans or its Early Access program. According to Dropbox, only content relevant to explicit requests or commands is shared with third-party AI partners. However, even if users opt out, files shared with others using Dropbox AI could still be sent to OpenAI servers.

With IBM Aspera, you don’t have to worry about your data and content being shared with third-party AI programs. Aspera ensures the security and integrity of data during transit, making it a trusted choice for enterprises—especially those handling sensitive information. As the leading high-speed data transfer software, it can seamlessly integrate with any existing infrastructures and cloud platforms to provide your organization with a reliable and efficient solution for your data transfer needs.
Contact PacGenesis, an IBM Platinum Business Partner, to learn more about how Aspera can help you transfer data and content.
